Heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria on its ratification of the Convention on Cluster Munitions on 28 February 2023. Nigeria’s ratification is another critical step in strengthening the norm against the use of cluster munitions and in enhancing the objectives of the humanitarian goals of the Convention. It brings the number of States Parties in Africa to 35 and should inspire all the other Signatory States in the region to do so.
The Convention will enter into force for Nigeria on 1 August 2023 in accordance with its Article 17(2). Its initial transparency report will be due on 28 January 2024.
The remaining 12 Signatory states and all States not Party to the CCM are encouraged to join the Convention as soon as possible to help achieve a world free from the harm caused by cluster munitions.
