ISU Director meets with UN ‘Youth Champions for Disarmament’

The United Nations Youth Champions for Disarmament Training Programme is a two-year project launched by the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), with the generous financial support from the Government of Germany. Six “youth champions” were selected for a study visit in New York and Geneva in March 2022, as part of an initiative for them to use their talents to help raise awareness and promote change for a more peaceful and secure world.

On 16 March 2022 at a meeting held at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), the youth champions received a briefing from the Director of the Implementation Support Unit of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (ISU CCM), Ms. Sheila N. Mweemba, on the Convention, its implementation and the wider global implications of the use of cluster munitions. This was also an opportunity for the ISU to engage with the next generation of disarmament advocates and policy makers.

On the Youth4Disarmament Instagram account, Ms. Naomi Ekpoki from Nigeria shared her favourite quote of the day, which was by Ms. Mweemba: “For development to be sustainable, it requires a certain environment to thrive, and this cannot happen in places where human security is not assured.”
